国际互联网名称和编号分配公司已通过开放顶级域名的注册限制，此举可能会给互联网带来翻天覆地的变化。这一最新决议允许公司将其品牌名称注册为通用顶级域名。目前已注册的顶级域名有200多个，包括代表世界各国和地区的域名，例如中国的顶级域名是.cn 。

The Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN) has just approved the relaxation of the rules for the introduction of new Top-Level Domains—a move that could drastically change the Internet. The new decision will allow companies to register their brands as generic top-level domain names (TLDs).

上述报道中，Top-Level Domains就是“顶级域名”，简称TLDs ，顶级域名指的是网址的后缀，一般都用来表示网站代表的地域或者类别，例如通用域名.com 代表商业类，..org 代表非营利性组织等等。TLDs 一般分为gTLDs （generic Top-Level Domains）“通用顶级域名”，如.com, .edu, .gov等，以及ccTLDs （country code Top-Level Domains ）“国家及地区代码顶级域名”，如.cn, .uk, .fr等。
